The Challenge

The Starting Point

Mežadārzs was operating an outdated custom-built eCommerce website with significant technical limitations, poor usability and very low online sales. Despite selling premium, high-value products from established brands, the digital experience was not effectively supporting the company’s commercial potential.

What the Client Believed Was Wrong

The existing website had become outdated both technically and from a customer-experience perspective. It was difficult to use, limited what the business could improve and was generating very few online purchases.

What Had Already Been Tried

Mežadārzs had been operating through its existing custom-built eCommerce website, but its technical limitations and usability problems prevented it from becoming an effective online sales channel.

Why It Needed Attention

The existing platform was no longer sufficient for the company’s growth ambitions, while the LIAA digitalization programme created an opportunity to make a more substantial investment in modernizing the eCommerce operation.

Risk of Doing Nothing

The business would continue relying heavily on offline sales while its eCommerce channel underperformed. Technical limitations and poor usability would continue restricting the company’s ability to convert online demand for premium garden equipment into purchases.

Constraints That Shaped the Solution

Mežadārzs sells relatively complex and often high-value products that customers may need to research and compare before purchasing. The digital experience therefore needed to communicate product information clearly while translating the company’s offline strengths — expertise, consultation, installation and servicing — into an online environment.

What Success Needed to Mean

Build an eCommerce channel capable of generating meaningful sales while maintaining the trust and expertise customers associate with the physical business. Longer term, success means continuously increasing conversion and making it easier for customers to discover, evaluate and purchase the right products online.

Our Approach

  • What the Evidence Showed

The problem was broader than visual design. The existing technical foundation limited development, while usability friction made it difficult for customers to discover, evaluate and purchase products online. For premium garden equipment, the website also needed to build sufficient confidence for customers to make higher-consideration purchases digitally.

  • What We Prioritized First

A modern and reliable eCommerce foundation. Before advanced CRO, analytics or marketing initiatives could create meaningful value, Mežadārzs needed a platform capable of supporting a better customer journey and continuous development.

  • How We Delivered It

WD Market helped prepare and manage the LIAA project and developed a completely new WooCommerce eCommerce platform. Following launch, the relationship expanded into continuous optimization through a comprehensive eCommerce Usability Audit, CRO, product-page improvements, side-cart optimization, upsells, advanced GA4 eCommerce tracking, SEO and ongoing UX/WooCommerce development.

  • How the Engagement Evolved

What began as an eCommerce redevelopment project evolved into a long-term growth and optimization partnership. After the new platform demonstrated strong commercial potential, the focus expanded into usability analysis, CRO, advanced analytics, product-page optimization, upselling and SEO.

Strategy

Strategic Decisions

  • WD Market developers reviewing code

    Recommendation

No major strategic reversal was required. The condition of the existing custom-built platform justified replacing it rather than continuing to invest in a technically limited foundation.

  • Two WD Market specialists discussing a laptop screen

What We Deliberately Did Not Recommend

We did not recommend continuing to patch and extend the outdated custom platform. Its technical and usability limitations were significant enough that incremental improvements would not provide the foundation required for long-term eCommerce growth.

  • WD Market developer working at a dual-monitor desk

Rebuild / Redesign / Spend Decision

This was a case where rebuilding was commercially justified. The existing platform was part of the problem, so WD Market developed a new WooCommerce store and then shifted the focus toward continuous optimization rather than repeated redesigns.
